Earlier in the week, we got word that Tom Cruise spent time chatting with David Coulthard and getting comfortable with a Red Bull F1 car. Now, Red Bull has release video of Mr. Cruise's somewhat less than impossible mission at California's Willow Springs raceway. We'd be lying if we said we weren't impressed with the actor's ability to push the car around the track, since we know Formula 1 cars aren't the easiest machines to pilot.

Want to know what's equally impressive? When the Red Bull crew lets Tom take the helm of their helicopter for some stunt flying. Want to see how Cruise handled either vehicle? Click past the jump for the clip.

Webber: Vettel dominance now over

Sebastian Vettel's single-handed dominance of Formula 1, which saw him win five of the opening six races of the year, has now come to an end as the season enters its final phase, reckons his Red Bull Racing team-mate Mark Webber. Vettel opened up a solid lead in the world championship thanks to a brilliant start to the campaign, where only Lewis Hamilton's triumph in China prevented him taking a clean-sweep of wins from Australia to Canada.

Kyle Busch grabs Chase spot with win

Kyle Busch held off reigning champion Jimmie Johnson in a green-white-chequered finish at Michigan to clinch a spot in this year's NASCAR Sprint Cup Chase. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver claimed the lead from his Hendrick Motorsports rival, who had been up front since the penultimate restart with 13 laps remaining, thanks to a timely final pitstop right before the last caution that placed him ahead once the frontrunners pitted for the last time. Johnson initially took advantage of the battle for second place following the penultimate restart but as Busch was able to get the better of Hendrick's Jeff Gordon and Roush Fenway's Matt Kenseth in the battle for second place, he quickly started eating into Johnson's lead.

McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh says his squad will be reinvigorated for the world title fight when the Formula 1 season resumes at Spa at the end of the month. 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the latest addition to the SLK Roadster lineup, the 2012 SLK55 AMG. For this iteration of the diminutive droptop, AMG is employing a naturally-aspirated version of Mercedes-Benz's 5.5-liter V8.

The new aluminum engine is good for 415 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque, which should be more than enough to motivate the little beast. To keep things eco-friendly somewhat greener, the new engine employs gasoline direct injection and a stop-start feature to help save fuel.

The V8 exhales through twin exhausts, which have flaps that open to deliver a throatier sound when your right foot comes down. All the go bits are mated to AMG's seven-speed Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic automatic cog box. Look for the hot-rodded SLK to arrive in showrooms early next year.

Monterey: Vrsteiner Ferrari 599-VX stands out among the crowd of exotics

Vrsteiner Ferrari 599-VX

Leave it to the Germans to build one of the best-looking Ferraris at this year's Concorso Italiano. When we first walked past this 599 in the Meguiar's booth we initially mistook it for the race-only 599XX. And that's the point. Deutsch aftermarket company Vörsteiner felt the Ferrari 599 GTO didn't look aggressive enough and developed a body kit for the standard 599 GTB Fiorano to make the car look more like its track-going brother. The result is the Vörsteiner Ferrari 599-VX.

The makeover is achieved via an eight-piece body kit that includes a new front end, hood, side skirts, rear decklid, rear intake panel and rear bumper with integrated diffuser. All components are constructed in lightweight carbon fiber, and a closer look revealed that the fit and finish is top notch and worthy of the Italian marque. Everything is finished off with a beautiful matte white vinyl wrap from 3M.

You can take a closer look at the Vörsteiner Ferrari 599-VX in the high-res gallery above.

SsangYong Concept XUV 1

There'll be plenty to see when we land in Frankfurt next month. And while SsangYong might not be at the top of the list, the Korean automaker will be on hand with a new crossover concept.

Having unveiled the Actyon-based SUT 1 concept in Geneva a few months back, SsangYong will present the Concept XUV 1 at the German expo. The shadowy renderings only give a glimpse at the vehicle's design, but show a more flowing shape than its existing stablemates. A windscreen that visually wraps around to the C-pillars works with a glass roof panel to give plenty of light to the flexible cabin configuration packed with what SsangYong calls the latest in automotive technology.

We'll reserve final judgement until we rush by it on the Messe's massive show floor, but for now you can follow the jump for the full press release and scope out the renderings in the gallery for more.

Gordon wants road course in the Chase

Jeff Gordon believes the NASCAR Sprint Cup's 10-race Chase for the Championship would benefit from having a road course race in the future. The four-time Cup champion, who has won more road course races at NASCAR's top level than anyone else, says that the only significant thing missing from the Chase is a non-oval race, and that the implementation of double-file restarts would add an extra dimension to the mix for drivers and fans

Franchitti on top in first practice

Dario Franchitti was fastest in the opening practice session for this weekend's IndyCar Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The defending series champion completed just 21 laps of the oval in his Chip Ganassi Racing Dallara, but wasted little time in knocking Marco Andretti from the top of the timesheets with a lap in 21.742s. Andretti, who had sat at the head of the standings since the early stages of the session in his Andretti Autosport car, was knocked down to fourth place, but improved his pace late on and pulled himself back up to second in a time 0.190s slower than Franchitti's best.

Consumer Reports 'chronicles decline in Honda's design competitiveness' [w/poll]

2012 honda civic

Consumer Reports created quite a stir on the Internets when it announced that it would no longer recommend the Honda Civic. The reason? The consumer advocacy institution cites issues such as the brakes, fit and finish and sporty handling all diminishing for the 2012 model year. In other words, the Civic isn't as good as the model it replaces.

Now CR is taking its criticism of Honda one step further, pointing out that several recent model updates have fallen short of CR's expectations. The Civic received an overall score of 78 back in 2006, but the new model scores only 61. The Pilot received a smaller drop from 2005 to 2009, going from a score of 79 to a 74. The Odyssey, too, took a hit, as the 2011 model scored an 83, down from the previous model's 91. Those models all show a clear decline in scores, but all-new models have fared even worse. The Insight managed to receive a 54, while the CR-Z could only muster a score of 57.

The reasons for these declines tend to correlate from model to model. Brakes, interior materials, steering feel and fit and finish tend to be some of the biggest reasons. Even worse for enthusiasts is that CR's testing shows that driving excitement (as nebulous as that term may be...) has diminished.

The results of recent Consumer Reports testing shows what we've been hearing for a while now. Honda appears to be struggling with new models, with few signs of progress on the horizon. CR points out that even the mighty Accord, which routinely finishes second in sedan sales, is now playing second fiddle to the Ford Fusion when it comes to reliability, ride and handling and cabin noise.

We want to know what you think. Has Honda design taken a step back? Let us know in the poll below.

Imperium Bentley Continental GT is a maroon menace

imperium continental gt

Buying an exotic luxury car can be an exciting process. You're not likely to run into other examples of your high-end machine on the street on a daily basis. Still, other examples do exist, and there will come a day when your rare ride meets its equal. Outfits exist to make sure that doesn't happen, one of which has taken a customer's Bentley Continental GT and transformed it into a bespoke one-of-one super coupe.

The company is called Imperium, and it's turned up the exclusivity knob on this particular Bentley. Carbon fiber body panels have been shaped to replace the old metal ones, and new subtly aggressive features are achieved. A set of forged one-off wheels complete the look, resulting in the handsome Imperium Continental GT seen here.

Imperium doesn't list a price to achieve this look. However, it states that only a few cars are completed each year, and every one is built to the exacting standards of the specific client, so you can bet it ain't cheap.

Video: Depth of Speed shows us how a first-year car show comes together

Euro SL,UT Fest

When a group of Salt Lake City auto enthusiasts decided they wanted to celebrate their love of European automobiles, Josh Clason brought along his Depth of Speed cameras to find out what it's like starting up a new car show from scratch. The resulting footage combines Clason's sharp visual style, great accompanying music, and good looking machines.

A Car Show Born tells the story of Jordan Melville and his friends bringing their car-show vision to life. We only wish we could have been there to dissuade them from calling it the Euro SL,UT Fest. A nice cross-section of Euro metal showed up to be captured by Clason's cameras, so click past the jump to watch the video.

2010 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Sang Blanc

Long after the Bugatti Veyron will have sped off into the history books, we'll still be unraveling the convoluted web of all the associated special editions it spawned.

One such example has just come to light and to the market. Like the similarly-named Sang Noir and Sang Bleu, this one-of-a-kind Sang Blanc edition is characterized by its color. In this case, that means a special matte white finish with contrasting black trim and interior. It's based on the Grand Sport, so it's also got the removable roof panel to let everyone around see who the special driver is.

Despite being a left-hand-drive model, the Sang Blanc is currently located in the UK. Asking price is available only upon request, though you can bet that seven-figure line of credit will evaporate as quickly as this car accelerates. Follow the link to the listing for more.

Daniel Juncadella grabbed both pole positions on offer during F3 Euro Series qualifying at the Nurburgring with a superb display of driving on fresh tyres. But with a fresh set of Kumho tyres bolted onto his Dallara-Mercedes, Juncadella set the fastest lap of the session in 1m22.675s to knock Rosenqvist off the top spot with five minutes to go and secure pole for Sunday's third race of the weekend.
