India Saturday quotes: Ferrari

Fernando Alonso: - 4th: "It was important to get onto the front two rows, as it's easier to fight for a good result from here. I don't think there's much of a difference between the two vertical lines of the grid because the ideal line on the start-finish straight goes down the middle, so both sides are quite dirty.

Escort marries social networking and radar detection with Android/iPhone app [w/video]

Now we're not suggesting that you're a lawbreaker, but if you're a social networker and you'd like to know where speedtraps are - for no reason at all - then Escort might be able to help. Makers of the Passport line of detectors, Escort has started a mobile app-supported network called Escort Live that features Bluetooth notifications.

When an Escort detector using a special Bluetooth-enabled cord - called SmartCord Live - registers a trap, it sends that info to the cloud, which then forwards that location to your smartphone to warn you of the trap if you're about to be in range. It can also identify red light cameras and other types of road surveillance systems.

The app works with certain Apple iPhone and Android handsets, and a subscription to the service through 2012 costs $79.95. That strikes us as rather pricy, but we suppose it's cheaper than a speeding ticket. Check out a video of it in action after the jump.

Report: Admin trying to terminate Saab reorg, Muller responds by trying to terminate admin

Saab emblem

Things are apparently getting nasty inside Saab as the company continues to scramble for a route to viability. Autocar reports that Guy Lofalk, the court-appointed administrator placed in charge of the company's reorganization affairs, recently applied to terminate the automaker's reorganization process. That move would effectively strip Saab of the protections it enjoys from its creditors while it seeks further investment from outside sources, which means it wouldn't be long before the company found itself snuffed out. But CEO Victor Muller has vowed that Saab will continue to fight for survival, and the automaker has reportedly moved to have Lofalk ousted from the process as a result of his actions.

How's that for some corporate drama?

Muller also said that he believes that Lofalk's talks with Pang Da and Youngman may have lead the two Chinese automakers to consider a full takeover of the Swedish brand instead of merely buying a 50-percent stake in the company. The two companies reportedly made a takeover offer today, but Muller says that Lofalk has overstepped his authority. Saab has since outright rejected the takeover offer, and both Pang Da and Youngman have backed away from the automaker altogether. That would appear to leave Saab with little more than a small investment from North Street Capital to keep it afloat.

Here's what the 2014 BMW M3 could look like

It's been less than a week since BMW dropped the first images of its redesigned 3 Series sedan on us, but already the imaginations are running wild about what the next M3 might look like. Automotive manipulator Theophilus Chin has given us his take on the F30-based M3, and it's about what you might expect.

With enlarged air ducts in the front fascia to feed the intercoolers for a rumored twin-turbo V6 setup, Chin's M3 is more aggressive, but retains the marque's penchant for subtlety. Around the back, Chin's M3 sedan has just a bit of a lip on the decklid and the telling quad exhaust pipes, but is thankfully devoid of boy-racer cues.

With the sixth-generation 3 Series sedan styling serving mostly to clean up the E90's lines, the next M3 will likely be treated similarly when it finally reaches our shores in 2014. While there will be plenty of M3 news to come, if the end product turned out much like these images, we wouldn't be surprised.

Garage door opener disaster

Perhaps we ought to subtitle this post, "Fun with extension cords and electrical tape," or "What's a building code violation?"

The idiocy on display in this video is just staggering. Not one, but two openers have been installed in a garage that doesn't appear to be wired for electricity. We won't reveal any more spoilers, as there's nearly three minutes of drama to be had here, as the camera traces the wiring path back to its source.

While we're all for manginuity, there's a pretty clear line between channeling your inner MacGyver and creating a fire hazard. Please don't try this in your own garage.

Andreas Mikkelsen will take a 50.7-second lead into the final day of the Rally of Scotland, having maintained a superb pace at the front of the field to pull clear of his nearest rivals. Jenson Button once again set the pace in the second free practice session for the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka on Friday. The McLaren man's best time of 1m31.901s was 0.174s quicker than Ferrari's Fernando Alonso. Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber were only third and fourth fastest, but the duo's long-run pace on the softer option Pirelli tyres suggested that they may have an advantage when things get serious later in the weekend.

Report: Fiat to develop 'Baby Jeep' in Italy, keep Compass/Patriot replacement in U.S.

jeep grille

The Fiat/Chrysler relationship has yet to spawn any post-marital offspring, but that will soon change. Automotive News reports that one of those vehicles could come in the size and shape of a "baby" Jeep that will be sold in Europe.

The B-segment Jeep, which we told you about back in August, will also be badged as a Fiat model. Two Fiat sources told AN that the vehicles will be built in Fiat's Minafiori plant in Turin, Italy, and there is a chance the vehicle could also be sold in the U.S.

Minafiori was originally pegged as the Euro plant of choice to build the successor to the Jeep Compass and Patriot models, but the Fiat sources say those plans have changed. The new plan reportedly calls for the Patriot/Compass replacement and an Alfa Romeo sibling to be built in the U.S.

A recent Fiat release revealed that the Minafiori plant will be rebuilt starting in 2012, and that a Jeep SUV will begin production in the second half of 2013.
