Long Term: 2011 Hyundai Equus Ultimate: July 2011

2011 Hyundai Equus

We've been racking up some serious miles on our long-term 2011 Hyundai Equus. Since its delivery in March, we've added nearly 11,000 miles to the odometer, and after that many miles of commuting, road tripping and cargo-shlepping, the interior of the big Hyundai was starting to get a bit dusty. During the month of July, we treated the Equus to some much-needed TLC.

In addition to an hour-long cleaning session at a local do-it-yourself wash and vacuum station, our Equus went in for its second oil change. After our issues with the valet service in May, we opted to just drop the car off at the dealership this time around, mostly because of timing issues on our behalf. Submitting a request for Equus service with an Apple iPad is still as easy as ever, and the dealership request for an appointment went flawlessly.

11,000 miles might not seem like enough time to accumulate lots of wear and tear on a vehicle's cabin, but upon closer inspection, our Equus is starting to show signs of aging.

Keep your eyes locked on the official Autoblog Facebook page for the majority of our updates, as well as the official Autoblog Twitter account (@therealautoblog, look for the #ablongterm hashtag).

Spies was ?set for front row?

Yamaha team director Massimo Meregalli is confident Ben Spies had the pace to earn a front row start for his home grand prix at Laguna Seca had he not crashed near the end of qualifying. Spies had briefly held provisional pole prior to the fall, in which he was not hurt, but fell to fourth in the end as he was unable to get back to the pits in time to rejoin on his spare bike. "We improved the bike a lot from yesterday in set-up and I think we could have got the first row," said Meregalli

Spy Shots: 2012 Porsche 911 caught nekkid with new lines

Porsche 911 Spy Shot

Porsche is letting the next-generation 911 out of the house with ever-skimpier garb. Our spy photographers managed to land a handful of photos of the vehicle out and about with nothing but a few decals covering the details. Engineers have worked to obfuscate the headlights, tail lights and front fascia, leaving the rest of the elongated 911 out in the open air for all to see. With the German automaker releasing a detailed teaser video of the vehicle and a few production stills of its own, there seems to be little motivation behind covering up the car's flanks.

While Porsche is still fairly tight-lipped about exactly what the next-generation sports car will bring, we've heard that the beast will pack a seven-speed manual transmission for increased fuel economy. Word is that base models will come packing 350 horsepower from a 3.4-liter flat-six cylinder engine, too, while offering better fuel economy thanks to tricks like electronic power steering. Stay tuned for more as we get it.

Report: Cadillac's first attempt at CTS Wagon didn't make it

first generation cadillac cts wagonSince Cadillac first unveiled the CTS as a 2003 model, the entry-level Caddy has come a long way. In fact, it is now a world-class luxury sports sedan. We've also been blessed (yes, blessed) by the arrival of the Cadillac CTS Wagon, which is available in both the enjoyable 3.6-liter flavor and the downright orgasmic V-for-Vendetta edition.

The current wagon is a brand-new varietal of the CTS family. There was no first generation CTS Wagon. Or was there?

Evan McCausland of Automobile fame ambled across a General Motors-owned parking lot that serves as a final resting place of discarded project vehicles. Parked amongst the unwanted heaps of GM iron was a wagon that caught McCausland's eye. More specifically, it appeared to be a first-generation Cadillac CTS Wagon.

Clearly, the engineers at GM have had a wagon on the brains for years. We, however, are thankful they waited for the current model to bring this plan to fruition.

Check out the Audi Allroad lookalike over at Automobile's site.

Online Find of the Day: 1997 Porsche 911 GT1 Strassenversion

Porsche 911 GT1 Strassenversion

Porsche is planning a full-on return to Le Mans in 2014, and while the German marque may be the most successful in the iconic race's history, the last time it took an overall victory there was in 1998 with the 911 GT1.

The regulations for the GT1 class at the time mandated a limited run of homologated street versions, and that's what you see here. Called the Straßenversion (that antiquated ß character in the German alphabet substituting for a double S), only 25 examples were made, and one's up for sale.

As a street-legal road car, the 911 GT1 Straßenversion followed the 959 and preceded the Carrera GT at the top of Porsche's lineup. While most were fitted with a version of the competition-spec 3.2-liter flat six with 536 horsepower, the seller of this particular example says his has been re-tuned to 690 hp. The car's asking price is €1.2 million (about $1.7 million), and it's currently located in Japan.

Official: Nissan Versa hatchback soldiers on for 2012 despite all-new sedan counterpart

Nissan has officially released pricing on the company's 2012 Versa Hatchback. Buyers looking for the functionality of a five-door can expect to pay $14,380 excluding destination charges for models equipped with a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and a six-speed manual transmission in S trim. Opting for a four-speed automatic gearbox will set you back an additional $1,000, while stepping up to SL trim with the company's Xtronic CVT will cost another $4,010. Of course, that stack of cash buys SL owners more than just the fuel-saving transmission. It also includes all of the equipment formerly stashed in the Premium Package as standard, including a leather-wrapped steering wheel, Bluetooth hands-free calling and 16-inch aluminum wheels.

Keep in mind that aside from the new standard equipment, the 2012 hatch will soldier on much as it was in 2011. Nissan says that since most of the model's sales were five-doors, it wanted to debut an all-new sedan first.

Even so, the five-door prices mark a steep increase over the base Versa Sedan, which starts at just $10,990 when equipped with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and a five-speed transmission. The hatchback Versa is on sale right now, but shoppers looking to get their hands on the low-buck four-door will have to wait until later this year. Hit the jump for the full press blast.

Chrysler recalling nearly 243,000 Ram pickups over tie rod concern

Chrysler has announced a recall that affects 242,780 Ram pickups manufactured between 2003 and 2011. This includes the 2008 Ram 1500, and 2003-2011 Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty trucks.

According to the official recall statement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these trucks may have a defective left tie rod ball stud that can fracture during low-speed parking maneuvers. According to NHTSA:

This condition could result in the potential loss of directional stability in the left hand front wheel, increasing the risk of a crash.

To remedy this potential problem, dealers will inspect the tie rod ends and perform an alignment if necessary. NHTSA states that Chrysler has not yet provided an owner notification schedule, but we'd expect this recall to ramp up within the coming weeks. Follow the jump for NHTSA's official statement.

But Mansell, who won his only world title with Williams in 1992, urged Hamilton against making a mistake by walking out on McLaren.

Detroit, F-150 and interstates among Fortune's "100 great things about America"

Fortune joined this weekend's parade of all things USA with its list of "100 great things about America." Be forewarned: the list itself is exceedingly dopey. After all, Clif bars, 60 Minutes, GEICO commercials, and LeBron James are among the things that Fortune somehow manages to rank ahead of the men and women collectively serving in our armed forces. (They're number 64, for whatever that's worth. Fortune separates out the SEALs, ranking them #5.)

Thanks to our nation's obsession with them, cars and car-related items dot the list as well. A few even crack Fortune's top 25: Detroit (#14), the Ford F-150 (#11) and interstate highways (#2). NASCAR sits at #51, drive-in movie theaters (the remaining few) occupy the 87th spot, Kevin Spacey's Honda commercial voice-overs rank 41st (not making any of this up) and Exxon Mobil comes in at #88.

To read the whole facepalm-inducing list, head over to Fortune, where you'll also learn that duct tape (#16) ranks ahead of the Bill of Rights (#17).
