Bike Lane Opponents File Appeal in Prospect Park West Lawsuit
Opponents of the Prospect Park West bike lane filed an appeal in their unsuccessful lawsuit against the city yesterday, hoping for a second chance to rip out the safety-enhancing redesign or, perhaps more likely, attract a few more months of headlines. As Streetsblog previously reported, the bike lane opponents will have even lower odds [...]

Video: Old Peugeot 205 GTI spot proves why CGI stinks
Filed under: Classics, Etc., Europe, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Hatchback, Peugeot

"Back in the All or Nothing days, the Vanishing Point days, the Dirty Larry Crazy Mary days, the White Line Fever days, real cars smashed into real cars with real dumb people driving them."
- Stunt Man Mike, Death Proof
Or in this case, real planes smashing into real cars. Call us old fashioned, but Computer-Generated Imagery has all but ruined film and advertising. In the old days, you'd have to actually find a way to breed human-sized hamsters and teach them to drive a Kia Soul if you wanted a set of Hamstars to peddle your wares. Now we just turn to our computer graphics department and ask them to make it happen. Why is that such a bad thing, you ask? Look no further than this classic ad for the Peugeot 205 GTI.
Not only does this old clip feature the French hatch bouncing down the side of a snowy mountain and dashing across a frozen lake, there are explosions, a full-size cargo plane skimming mere feet from the Pug's roof and plenty of sliding around in the powder. James Bond would be proud. What does all of this tell us about the 205 GTI? Not a damn thing, and that's fine by us. Hit the jump for a look at the clip.

Video: World's oldest running car up for auction
Filed under: Classics, Auctions, Videos

The world's oldest running car is officially up for auction. The 1884 De Dion Bouton Et Trapardoux Dos-A-Dos Steam Runabout has been owned by the same family for the past 81 years, and perhaps even more remarkably, has only had four owners in 127 years. With a top speed of 38 mph and a range of 20 miles on a single tank of water, the steam-powered tricycle has made the trek from London to Brighton four times and participated in the world's very first auto race. To be fair, it was was the only vehicle to show up, but that didn't stop it from averaging 16 mph and clipping off a top speed of 37 mph over the 20 mile course.
If the Runabout's motorsports credentials aren't enough for you, the vehicle brought home double awards at the 1997 Pebble Beach Concours.
A total of 20 De Dion tricycles were manufactured, and of those, only six remain. This is the only operable example in existence, and if you want to make it yours, you'll need to give your checkbook a workout. RM Auctions expects the De Dion to command bids between $2 million and $2.5 million. Hit the jump for a quick video on the vehicle.

Spy Shots: Porsche's new 911 Convertible caught near 'Ring
Filed under: Spy Photos, Convertible, Performance, Porsche

Porsche has officially shown off its latest 911, and we got up close with the 2012 hardtop at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Droptop fans are still waiting on their own version of the 991, and our spy photographers have just managed to capture a few images of the upcoming convertible. The 2012 Porsche 911 Cabriolet should arrive on the auto show circuit in the next few months before it heads to your local dealership.
You can expect to find the same 3.4- and 3.6-liter flat-six engines tucked in the back as seen in the hardtop Carrera and Carrera S. Each will be paired with the PDK double-clutch or the all-new seven-speed manual gearbox. Whichever engine and transmission you decide to go with, expect to pay around $90k-100k for the privilege.

Official: BMW announces new Power Kits for 135i and 335i
Filed under: Coupe, Sedan, Performance, Technology, Crossover, BMW

If 300 horsepower is good, 320 horsepower is better. And when that 20-horsepower boost comes at a cost of just $599, it's really a no-brainer as far as we're concerned.
BMW hopes you agree, as it's officially announced two new Power Kits for the 135i, 335i and certain X6 models that boost the power of the 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six by the aforementioned twenty ponies. Just as welcome is a boost in torque from 300 to 332 pound-feet (when equipped with an automatic transmission) and 317 lb-ft (when equipped with a manual or DCT transmission).
The increase comes courtesy of what BMW is calling Version 1 Power Kit, which basically amounts to a reflash of the car's computer system, and it can be applied to any 135i or 335i and all X6 models produced before April of 2010. These power figures bring the turbocharged machines up to the specification of the 2011 335is.
A second option is the Version 2 Power Kit, which adds an auxiliary water cooler and "enhanced" radiator fan to the reflash on 1 Series and 3 Series models. The V2PK costs $1,199, a modest increase over the $599 of Version 1 considering the added hardware. Both kits also include an "exhaust burble sound during engine overrun conditions." BMW is quick to point out other modifications may be necessary and that installation isn't included in that price.
In case you're thinking this all sounds rather familiar, BMW did indeed make a similar announcement a little while back. While that press release heralded the option for new buyers of the 2011 335i, this one indicates the availability of current owners to get the upgrade retrofitted to their cars while their warranties remain intact. For all the details, hit the jump for the press release.

Report: ILVTOFU: Tennessee woman denied to display her love of tofu
Filed under: Etc., Government/Legal

Tofu - some love it, some hate it. For those who don't know, tofu originated in China and is a staple in many Asian dishes. It's made by pressing coagulating soy milk into block-shaped forms, and it's high in protein and low in calories and fat. Hence, it's standard fare for many vegetarians.
Sounds pretty good, huh? A PETA employee named Whitney Calk from Tennessee is apparently a big fan of the bean curd, and she says she wanted to proclaim her love of tofu on her license plate. Unfortunately, the State of Tennessee decided that I-LV-TOFU looked eerily similar to I-LV-TO-FU...
Look closely at the two possible spellings and it's easy to see why the authorities decided to lay down the law. In fact, Tennessee points out that it's not the only state to ban that plate - it's also verboten in Colorado, Florida and Virginia.
For its part, PETA has issued a press release asking Tennessee to reconsider. Cynics might argue that the whole shebang was merely an attempt to generate press for the animal rights organization, which may certainly be the case. And if so, it seems to be working: you can check out PETA's press release after the break.

Video: The only video you need to see from the Baltimore Grand Prix
Filed under: Motorsports, Etc., Videos

The very first Baltimore Grand Prix wrapped up this weekend with Will Power taking the top of the podium, but some of the most intense action of the event happened before the green flag ever dropped. During practice laps Sunday morning, Tony Kanaan lost all brakes in his car on the 180 mph front straight and wound up careening into and over Helio Castroneves before turn one. While we can imagine that being airborne in a race car is a terrifying experience, being run over by one can't be a walk in the park either.
Miraculously, both drivers were unscathed in the dustup, and Kanaan went on to take third place with a backup car in the main event. While the video of the crash is nail-biting through and through, we've got to say this is the first time we've heard an IndyCar announcer compare anything on track to "The Dukes of Hazard." Click past the jump to check it out.
